Mission Statement

"This site is designed to showcase and promote passionate photographic professionals by providing another avenue to present their work to the broader community of New York City and beyond.

In the process of building this site, we agree that technology may warrant progress, however, we have no reservation in expressing our opposition in what seems to be the slow proposed destruction of traditional film photography.

Therefore, in a continuing effort to bring together its members, we strive to create an ethic of trust and cooperation dedicated in reinforcing and celebrating diversity of one another's spirit, talent, and give rise to visionary work...ultimately, creating a supportive community of mutual assistance and a progressive photographic movement."

Who We Are

Initially, it can be explained as a venture into ones vision.

In the process, we sometimes discover some things about ourselves, and our lives. Regardless of what may or may not be learned, it is a journey. A journey we refuse to turn back from. So, we continue.

It may be an innermost need to be understood and acknowledged. We may even understand ourselves a little better. For some, it just confuses us even more.

Regardless what may indeed drives us, there is something to be said about the "wet-process", and how we are somehow touched by the amber glow in the darkness, the sound of running water, the cold stainless steel that surrounds us, and the smell of photo-chemicals in the air. The end result is when we walk out of that darkroom with the silver-gelatin prints. There is nothing else like it, something special.

In comparison, due to its popularity, digital photography has become the "norm". This new world of the "dry-process" has led everybody to believe that anyone can be a photographer. It has created a new approach to photography, in which proper exposure is not relevant, since the image can "always" be fixed on the computer.

The current generation really does not know what they are in jeopardy of losing, and future generations may not even know what they have lost. "Quality", indeed needs to be scrutinized. It is all incomprehensible, yet acceptable.

Although, we do acknowledge that digital has its place, we are dedicated to keeping the "wet-process" alive.

We are a new creative community, showcasing passionate photographic professionals with unique styles in visual and artistic interpretations, dedicated and committed to offer the highest quality, professionalism, and service.

Together, we are...

...THE ART OF EXPOSURE.

Frequently Asked Questions

Membership Questions

Q: How do I become a Member?
A: TheArtofExposure.com is looking for strong work, in content and form, that best adheres to the philosophy and principals set forth in our Mission Statement. We take membership to our site very seriously, which makes the selection process all the more difficult. While we obviously have the desire to promote as many photographers as possible, we must be strict in our standards so that we can ensure that we display the best work available. When considering potential members, we take into account not only a portfolio's overall quality and coherence, but what it may bring to the site as a whole and whether or not it is similar (in style and/or subject matter) to works previously submitted. While we do not require any "resume" type material submitted with each portfolio (the work should stand on its own), we do require a brief written statement about each applicant outlining their background, their submitted work, and why they wish to become a member of our site. Once a portfolio is submitted, applicants will be informed whether they have been accepted or not, but no further evaulations will be given. Being that TheArtOfExposure.com is a small site, with limited staff, we do not have the ability to go into detail with each and every applicant. Also, please rest assured that all submitted material that is not accepted will be deleted immediately, so there is no chance of misuse of work.

Having said all that, the first step in becoming a member is getting familiar with our Mission Statement, FAQ, and Submission Guidelines sections. The next step is to collect your best work and contact us!

Q: What do I get in becoming a Member?
A: We will work with you in creating a customized Portfolio that is reflective of your unique style. By allowing us to create your own personalized Portfolio, we attempt to emphasize your individuality within our creative photographic community. You will be able to display up to 48 images in your online Portfolio(s). As membership grows, as a result, TheArtOfExposure.com will continue to build loyal visitors in search of their photographic needs of which you may profit from. Other amenities are soon to come and will be posted as soon as they are set in place.

Q: What is the length of my Membership?
A: It is a One-year membership.

Q: Who makes the final choice of images that will be placed in my portfolio?
A: It is a collaborative effort between you and TheArtOfExposure.com. You (Photographer/Member) will be required to submit at least 96 images that are tightly edited and are technically excellent, we will then make the final cut as to what will be shown. You must be willing to trust our instincts. This is why no "rejects" should be submitted.
NOTE: 96 images is actually double the amount of images (48) that you will be able to showcase in your portfolio.

Q: Will I be able to update the images that are in my Portfolio?
A: Yes, you are encouraged to keep your Portfolio "fresh".

Q: How often will I be able to update the images that are in my Portfolio?

Q: How long does it take for images I submit for internet viewing in my online Portfolio?
A: All images are reviewed prior to being posted on the site, to confirm that they meet TheArtOfExposure.com guidelines set forth. We make every attempt to review images within 3-4 business days.

Q: Who holds the copyright for the Photographic work I display?
A: You do. You retain full ownership and copyright of your Photographic work. However, by submitting content to this site, you automatically agree to grant to TheArtOfExposure.com the exclusive worldwide license, a royalty-free, perpetual, irrevocable right and license to use, publish, reproduce, distribute, transmit, publicly display, exhibit the Accepted Images and content in any manner (alone or in combination with any other material), in all formats and media known that TheArtOfExposure.com deems appropriate, in its sole and exclusive discretion, consistent with TheArtOfExposure.com's mission, if you were to be accepted as a member.

Q: What happens if someone sees my work and wants to contact me?
A: Your actual contact information is not revealed to them until you decide to share it with them. TheArtOfExposure.com will forward all legitimate inquiries to you via email.

Technical Questions

Q: What do you mean by "digital images" of my Photographs?
A: Digital images are electronic files (representations) scanned from your photographs, negatives, and/or transparencies. The digital image is sampled and mapped as a grid of pixels (picture elements), then interpreted by the computer for display. In order to upload your digital images of your photographs to TheArtOfExposure.com site, they must be in JPEG (.jpg) format.

Q: What is a Pixel?
A: A Pixel is a "picture element", the smallest unit on the computer display screen grid that can be displayed.

Q: What are Pixel Dimensions?
A: Pixel Dimensions are the horizontal and vertical measurements of a digital image expressed in pixels. It is expressed as the first number horizontally and the second number vertically. (e.g. 1,024 by 768, 800 x 600).

Q: What is DPI?
A: DPI is an abbreviation for "Dots Per Inch" and refers to the number of dots of color that are displayed or printed per inch. A higher DPI generates better image quality.

Q: What is Resolution?
A: Resolution is a term used to describe the amount of information that a video display can reproduce. A high-resolution image looks smooth and realistic, while a low-resolution image looks blocky and jagged.

Q: What is JPEG (jpg) image format?
A: JPEG image format is an abbreviation for Joint Photographic Experts Group, and is the predominant format for electronic storage of photographic images, without any degradation in image quality (to the human eye at normal viewing magnification). JPEG is supported by most browsers, offers millions of colors, but does not require any manipulation of the color table.

Q: What is TIFF format?
A: TIFF is an abbreviation for Tagged Image File Format and is a "lossless" image format compression process. The TIFF format is not widely used for photographic images used on browsers primarily because it creates very large files. JPEG or JPG are the norm.

Q: What is "lossy" compression?
A: File compression, by various algorithm techniques, is accomplished by eliminating gaps, redundancy, or unnecessary data. To reduce digital files, pending on the method of compression used, different levels of quality may be sacrificed. Data compression techniques in which some amount of data is lost are referred to as "lossy".
